University Graduates

What oppotunities are available for a recent graduate?

Hi I recently graduated from uni and have found that jobs relating to my degree are very hard to come by, and positions are easily filled by unemployed people who have been in the industry and had a lot more experience than a recent graduate. I would love to go into further education but I can't afford too and I have tried getting a job in retail etc, but as I have no previous experience I keep getting rejected also. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance

  1. Keep trying. It's a numbers game: so many interviews for every 100 applications you send out. Keep looking in different places. Join professional networking associations for people in the profession you want (for example, if you were a marketing student, I'd advise the American Marketing Association). Join linkedin.com. One pointer though - make sure there are no spelling errors in your letters (there are in your question). Good luck.
  2. what have you graduated in?
  3. air force they will pay for everything school food houseing they will give you a job its not a bad deal navy is better then airforce but the navy is full lol im in the navy about to go specops
  4. Be flexible. A BA doesn't necessarily mean you're trained for that field. i.e. a BA in Music doesn't guarantee you a job in the Music industry, and a BA in Psychology doesn't qualify you to be a Psychologist. But, if you're flexible, and take what opportunities present themselves, you'll find decent employment. After all, a Bachelor's degree's "major" is about teaching you to Think, using that discipline... So, if you have your BA in Philosophy, the big benefit is that you know how to think, from the perspective of philosophers, like Sarte or Plato. If you have your BA in History, you know how to think, particularly from a Historical perspective. These degrees train you for more than just jobs as philosophers or historians.
  5. Send out resumes to everywhere you can think of. Like The Bay or A furniture store or Make up and Beauty Stores. You need to start at the bottom and work your way up. Also get a part time job while you're waiting and put it on your resume, when the manager reads it they'll know you already work and want to become something of yourself and know you're not lazy and they'll be more likely to hire you.
  6. I graduated in 2008 and found for the best part of a year I was volunteering to gain the experience necessary just to get a foot in the door. If you're lucky enough for this to be an option, id try that. Annoying when you have a loan to pay off I know. Keep firing off as many apps as possible, tailor them as required but dont fret over tailoring as much as I did. Stay busy, keep your chin up, its quite a mess were in but you will get something in the end oh and if you have contacts, exploit them for all they are worth to put a good word in for you, I wasnt blessed with this so its not vital
  7. What is your degree in? I got my degree in print journalism. I'm going back to school!
  8. most people just mass submit resumes, you need to conjure the gall to go into an employers locale and hand deliver your resume to the hiring manager. leave and good first impression and then you'll get an interview.
