  1. I think it is worth it as although there is a very high number of graduates going for each of these jobs, there is a high number of people applying for all jobs at the moment because of the current financial climate. With regards to the debt, some jobs rely on you to have a degree so if that is your goal, you unfortunately just have to grit your teeth and do it.
  2. If you can't make a living without it, you need it. If you can do without it, you don't need it. Simple as that. It's different for everyone.
  3. The thing you have to consider first, is what degree you are going to take and where does it fit in with the job market. How many employers are going to be looking for those qualifications? Universities are churning people out with "Mikey Mouse" degrees that aren't worth the paper they are printed on and are absolutely useless in the job market. Like Media Studies and the like. You must have heard about them and read about it in the press over the past couple of years and Graduates who still can't get jobs because of them. Which is basically three years of your life down the pan for nothing except getting pissed and fornicating every night!!
  4. Going to university should be a step on a career path and not something you do while you decide where you are going. This is what caused the Government to bring in charges in the first place - there where to many people going to university to doss and avoid joining the grown up world and jobs. If you have a career in mind and need a degree then of course the fees are worth it - you will attain a higher salary. If you have still not got any direction - then university should not be seen as a holding area for you while you decide. Young people take their options in year 9 and so choose the GCSE they will sit. It is THEN that these decisions begin. Young people need pushing at that stage into choosing a direction - whether it medicine, business, building etc - when you have done GCSEs and then gone on to Levels (presumably with something in mind) you should already know if you need a university education to achieve your goals. If by this stage you are still dithering - see the careers service and sort out what it is you want to do.
  5. The fifty graduates going for each job are made up of students who studied things like media studies, social studies, the arts, ie courses with little economic use. Those who studied maths sciences, engineering and so on will still be able to find work. As for the 'debt.' Until you earn a decent wage you repay nothing. If your first five years are relatively low paid your debt has gone. Work it out. Is it a debt or a grant?
  6. Yes, because getting a degree is really fun (being at uni) and also it is the icing on top of your cake of education - its the offficial end of your education because you will have completed all education if you do a degree. besides, these days most people have a degree, so if you dont and apply for a job, you will be instantly discounted from the shortlist. who cares about the debt, its insignificant when you have a job and it just peters out after a few years without you really noticing. its not like you're being hounded by loan sharks for it!
