How can I make friends with university students?

I am a 64 year old man with technical interests. How do I get into the university social set up? I am in London UK I am not going back to university, just want to meet young people with tecnical ideas.

4. if u r going to uni with you then i guess just be as nice as you can be, don't try to act young otherwise they will think your weird try to be cool with what ppl say about ya but make sure that you don''t let them trample on you. be polite. don't take advantage. don't act cool.
5. I would just be yourself. We had mature students on my course and we all got on fine with them because we respected them. Would you be doing a postgradate masters? Ull find a lot of the people doing masters are sometimes older than the typical uni student. And a lot more serious about their study because of the high cost of a masters. You'll defo meet like minded people at uni...thats what uni is all about. Ah scratch that then....internet forums? u can discuss your ideas with a variety of different people on all topics. Or join a discussion group? im sure you could find details of one somewhere.
6. Go to the student union! Personally, though as a recently graduated student I wouldn't want to associate with someone that much older unless it is in a working or educational context. Sorry!

You sound like someone with more than interest in 'technical idea', because, 1) 'technical' is very vague and if you were really an engineer you would mention something like fluid mechanics or semiconductor design ,etc., 2) you don't need to make friends to discuss technical ideas, 3) most people with such interests know that young university students do not really have great technical ideas and do not talk intelligently about them; you find them in specialist clubs, e.g. vintage steam train societies, and such like. If you are really interested in young people, you will find that most of them are too young for you and you are heading for disappointment or a minefield.
