How should university students do to choose their subjects?

Some ones think university students should only study one specialist subject. Others think the universities should encourage the students to learn a range of subjects in addition to a specialist area. Give your opinion?

  1. In my uni, we have to do two other subjects in first and second year as well as our main subject. Which I think's really rubbish. I'm not interested in my two other subjects at all so I'm not doing so well in them which is bringing me grade point average down, which is hindering my chances of doing the subject that I am actually good at and interested in.
  2. In my first year I was allowed to pick from a range of subjects (I could pick 4 in total from about 12). In my second and third years it was more specialised. That is the best way, imo.
  3. I think it depends on the subject, and on what you want to do with it afterwards. Sometimes it's useful to be able to cross over between subjects. E.g. if you want to be an art therapist it would be great if you had a good background in both art and psychology, perhaps with some knowledge of education. Or a sound engineer might find it useful to do music and physics, and maybe computing.
  4. I think earlier years, like freshman year it is more a range of subjects and becomes more specialized later. I think it is encouraged because if the student changes their mind on what degree program they want to pursue ( which is very often ) You would have some classes covered than if you just specialized in the previous area you were pursuing. I believe this is why students are encouraged to study many subjects rather than just specializing from the beginning.
