  1. Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Famous Vanderbilt Alumni & Faculty: Tom Schulman, who wrote the screenplay for Dead Poet's Society, graduated from Vanderbilt and Montgomery Bell Academy, a local private boys school. In 1986, Dr. Stanley Cohen, Professor of Biochemistry, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his research on nerve and epidermal growth factors. Robert Penn Warren, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel All the King's Men, graduated from Vanderbilt in 1925. He was one of the famous Fugitives. The Fugitives were a group of sixteen southerners -- the majority of whom were students or professors at Vanderbilt -- who published their early literary works in 19 issues of The Fugitive. These works appeared between April of 1922 and December of 1925. Four of the Fugitives were also Agrarians: John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, Donald Davidson, and Robert Penn Warren. They combined their personal essays with those of eight other Southerners in the 1930 publication I'll Take My Stand. These essays support the ideals and moral obligations of the agrarian South and attack the materialistic and dehumanizing forces with which the authors associated the industrialization of America. Madison Sarratt was not an alumnus of Vanderbilt. He was a math professor here who gained a prominent place in the hearts of the Vanderbilt community. Delbert Mann was a noted film director who directed Marty, a 1955 film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Director. Marty starred Ernest Borgnine. Mann graduated from Vanderbilt in 1941. Former Major League Baseball player Joey Cora was a 1985 graduate from Vanderbilt. Cora was the 23rd overall pick in the draft that year by the San Diego Padres. Former Clinton Deputy Chief of Staff and Gore Chief of Staff Roy Neel is a graduate of Vanderbilt who majored in Fine Arts. Neel has written a book on the history of Vanderbilt basketball and co-taught a course on Political Transitions in the Political Science Department. Neel coordinated phone calls with George Stephanopolous, David Gergen, James Carville, Chase Untemeyer, and many others for the students. Students also had a conference phone call with President Clinton from his NYC office and had a private lunch with former Vice-President Gore. Neel was planning Gore's transition during the election 2000 fiasco and likely would have been Gore's Chief of Staff.
