University Graduates

In Australia, can an employer legally ask to see a university graduates academic transcripts?

I understand that as an employer I am able to request to see a candidates degree certificate, it was told to me that I was not actually within my rights to request an academic transcript as well..is that how it works?

1. Yes, they have a right to do so.
2. I assume it's legal, because I've been asked a few times to show my transcripts. Also employment agencies have asked to see them too.
