What is a graduate assistantship position, how do you become one?

I am starting my grad program on Jan 8, where do i begin, and how do i promote myself to be a graduate assistant?

1. It really depends upon the school and department you are joining. In technical areas you should already have one before you go there next week. In other areas you will have to talk to the department chairman and ask them how to get one. Plus, find a professor you like and talk with them about thier work. When you find an advisor they might be able to give you one or help you get one.
