University Graduates

When should I start looking for graduate work? And what type (and how) of work should I be looking for?

I graduate from a Fine Art Painting degree this June - I am expected to get a 2.1/1st and attend a very well respected art institution. However, I am aware of the downfalls of becoming a practising artist (until a reputation is built up it is not the most reliable of salaries) and am interested in getting a graduate position of some kind (and let's face it, with the difficulties of finding a job, any would do) to clear the debts I've incurred as a student and to settle myself before deciding what to do later. How soon should I start looking though? And what type of work should I be looking for/would be interested in me? I am very much used to the 9-5 hours as studio work is just that; and I previously worked as an Admin Assistant and a receptionist/society tutor in the holidays. Thanks.

  1. when I left Uni in June I had already started looking & applying by now
  2. I would start looking now. Some of the top graduate employers posted adverts for graduate jobs back in September of last year, with closing dates in November! Another thing you could consider is further study, such as a Masters, or you could train as an art teacher! Not necessarily for schools, but for colleges or uni's. Best of luck to you
  3. Start looking now and explain your situation to prospective employers!
