I'm starting a HR consulting firm with a friend. How do I get the business started? How to market it? Taxes? She lives in MA and I will be living in Washington DC area. We each will have full-time jobs and running the business part-time. I know that we need a website, but we are strapped for cash. Thank you.
Help finding jobs in HR? I think my situation might be unique to others trying to find work in HR or maybe I’m wrong. Well a little history about my situation. I have a bachelor of arts in history from Ohio State and recently received my masters of science in human resources from Golden Gate University this past spring. My work experience has not been exactly in HR. When I first graduated from OSU I jumped around for job to job. I finally stayed with a position as a pension administrator for two and a half years. Then a little over two years ago I started working for Towers Watson (large HR consulting firm) as a pension analyst where I help to administer pension plans and help actuaries value defined benefit plans. Don’t have any experience within a HR department however I feel that I have experience dealing with some HR functions (mostly benefits). I have been looking at various HR departments for positions but with no luck. I’m wondering if anyone would have any advice for me. I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank You.
Is service charge legal for overseas recruitment by Aditya Consulting(also Trilink HR), Alwaye, India? Many people who are offered job by Aditya Consulting( Also known as Trilink HR) at Trilink Electromechanical works , UAE have to pay hefty amount as service charge. Is this legal?. How to check. Which is the contact point to know the detaiils of this
I am applying for an HR consultant contract job for a 2 week duration. How much should i charge the company? I have never done HR consulting before but I have 6+ years of experience in HR. I think I should be charging per hour, but I don't even know what number to give as my rate.
What are some OTHER jobs that I can get with my Masters degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology? I worked in HR for a fortune 500 company for 3 years, then most recently I got a consulting job--and I DONT like it! Believe it or not, I think that I don't like to be in a "business" or "executive" type environment! Im more laid back and also I am someone who knows theres more to life than working behind a desk all day, or helping solve other peoples HR or managment problems.........What can I do????
How to attract both Job seekers and employers to our Hr Consulting firm? Are there any special services which will attract both the employer and job seeker?
Does my bad credit keep preventing me from jobs? Recently I got an offer from a multi-nation HR consulting company. I know this company does background check, and I am very concerned that my offer may be retracted due to my poor credit history. I do not have bankrupcy or anything like that, and mostly what I have are late payment for school loans and one revolving account, and no unpaid balance now. Should I call my employer's HR and tell them up front about my credit in my past, or I really cannot do anything at this point of time? What should I do to repair my credit?
115k + benefits vs. 90/hr no benefits - help with decision? I make 115k a year, plus benefits - including 401k at 7% match and potential bonus (probably 10%). I also get 17 vacation days + holidays. My commute is less than 20 minutes each way. I work 40 - 45 hours a week. I was offered a 3+ year consulting job at 90/hr but I would have to be an S-Corporation. No benefits or anything and the commute would be 1 hour and 45 minutes each way. I would most likely work 45 - 50 hours a week. I'm having a hard time comparing both. Most formulas I found online are simplified and don't take benefits into account. I'm thinking non-401k compensation is around 20k. Add 7k for 401k match. I would have to pay double Soc Security taxes - which I think would add another 10k(??). If I add all that up, my total comp is around 152k. 90/hr with comparable time off is close to 172k minimum. 20k for 3 hours more a day commuting doesn't sound worth it. Are my numbers above off? I know that if I do put in 50 hours per week - I'm approaching 200k. More details based on the very helpful responses. First off I'm not showing off I'm probably a little above the mean for my profession. Amy V - where did you get the FICA numbers from? I think your numbers overall are good but maybe skewed a bit. 6-8 week vaca? More like 4. I would be working for only one company and the job security is very high - they are hiring specifically for a long term project and may offer permanent. That may sound naive but it's very solid and finding another job shouldn't be an issue. I don't mind that risk. 45+ hours a week is expected and will not be less than 40. My wife can get Health and 401k. I do have a child. I can write off my commuting costs if S-corp. I guess I'm asking two questions. How to compare monetarily apples to apples? How much is 3 hours a day worth? I'd leave at 6:30am and get home after 7:30pm most days. Responses are great and are helping me very much. Thanks!
Any HR consultant here? Plz Thx? Hi I need an HR consultant who works in a consulting company to answer some questions. This is part of my professional consulting class assignment. You could answer it under this or shoot me an email with the answer. Each question won't take more than 1 min to answer. MANY THX! There are ten of them, 1. Why you chose to be a HR consultant? How you got started? 2. Do you like your job as a HR consultant? Why? 3. What type of consulting that you specialize in? 4. How's about the lifestyle of a consultant? Good or bad pay? Under a lot of pressure or not? 5. People argue that HR is quite different from other management fields that HR is the only one that speicalize in handling people (not like accountants handling number or market professionals handling goods and sales). So are there any necessary skills vital to HR professionals or HR consultants? 6. My prof. tells me counsltants normally either solve a problem or help the client to grab an improtant opportunity. So which situation you facing the most? Problem solving or forecast the future? 7. Compare with the internal HR professionals who work within your clients' companies, what's the advantage of an external HR consultant like you? 8. Does personality play a lot in the HR consulting industry? For example, will an outgoing people do better than the people like to be alone? 9. My prof. tells me the modern consulting is all about managing your relationship with the clients, what's your opinion about this saying? 10. Between High level education and experience, which one would be valued more in the HR consulting industry? THX AGAIN!
Where can I find some motivation? I quit my job as an academic researcher, hoping to find a position in the private sector while continuing with some freelance work. The past few months have been nothing but sheer disappointment. I had been hoping to find a position as a media/telecom industry analyst, but a couple job leads never panned out and I haven't received any other responses from the few firms that do this research. Then I cast a wider net for management consulting positions, but again got nowhere. I'm now expecting an offer from an HR consulting firm, but it has me even more depressed because I never wanted to go into HR. On the other hand, I'm tempted to pursue it rather than face further months of uncertainty and unemployment....yet I keep thinking this may be a career blunder. I feel demoralized and unsure how to manage my life and career. I've read What Color is Your Parachute? but find it utterly useless. What can I do to stay motivated and press on with the job hunt?
First potential computer consulting job (auction/host management). Any advice? I am former computer professional who is trying to get his feet wet again, trying to get back into the industry. I have a potential client who is in the auction business, but no longer wants to be on ebay. He is considering hiring me to create a new auction site for him and manage it. He has full-time employees to manage and create the products and users. I will manage the website itself, supporting him and his employees. I'm looking into hosting services, especially those with pre-made auction website software. I've come up with one I like, and a bunch of lesser alternatives. I will be giving a proposal to him on Thursday (does not have to be formally-written...much of it will be verbal). I've not done private consulting work before, and was hoping some of you out there might have some advice on what to focus on regarding - the proposal, - how much to charge (the software is 695 one-time charge, and the hosting 250/yr, and 85/hr if *I* need assistance), I'm thinking 2k up front, then 20% of his auction returns, with no other future fees. - creating a contract (it is someone I have known for a long time and trust), - how to offer what is fair regarding quick personal support, without opening myself up to bombardments of phone calls and emails 24/7/365 - What to look for from the hosting service - Whatever else I might need to keep in mind. Although it's been a while, I have done web-scripting before, including some pretty hard-core Oracle. This software is written in PHP and MySQL. I don't know these technologies in particular, but I'm sure I won't find them all that different. I'm obviously responsible to fix problems, and, as I said above, if *I* need assistance, the hosting company will give it to me for 85-bucks-an-hour. Sorry this is sort of a nebulous, vague question, but this is very new to me. Thank you for any advice you have.
Is Nursing or Engineering better for gaining entry into HR management? I finished the courses for an M.S. in organizational psychology and human resources almost a year ago. I've been looking for a job in HR, training, program management and evaluation, corporate research, consulting, etc. ever since. We all know it's rough out there. I've been thinking about working in a high demand field for a couple of years and then moving into management, HR management, or field specific consulting. Pros of Nursing: High demand, high projected demand Much more accessible for women than Engineering More accessible for people of color than Engineering Will take less than two years to receive degree as opposed to at least three years for Engineering training Pros of Engineering Field: Higher pay than Nursing High demand for certain occupations More job autonomy than Nursing Which of these fields offers the best opportunity for quick advancement to the managerial level? I love to learn, don't find one more interesting than the other, and am NOT concerned about the difficulty of either program. After experiencing graduate school I know what it's like to devote 60 hours a week to studying, classwork, research and an internship.
Pre-Negotiating a salary on a Right to Hire opportunity? I have an opportunity where I will work as a consultant and after three months the company has the "right to hire" me as a full time permanent employee. My question is should I not negiotiate my full time salary prior to starting the consulting job. Therefore at the end of the 3 months, the company can hire me full time or not, but at least the salary is prenegotiated. The reason for this is to avoid this problem: (Figures are not real) Suppose I take a consulting opportunity for just say $35/hr ($72,800/yr). Now at the end of the 3 months, just suppose the company offers $65,000. That's less than what I was making. There can be problems negotiating a salary at that time because that puts me in a situation where I am more forced to take that salary because I am in the job already. Shouldn't I negotiate this prior to starting the job, so there is no confusion as to what the salary will be and what I am looking for. What do you think?
How do i apply for a job in a consulting firm? While applying 4 a job in a consulting firm, does one have 2 mention the functional area he/she wants 2 get into.i am not sure about how i shud apply 4 a job in a consulting company. wat i am confused wit is that if i apply for HR, do i get 2 be trained as an HR consultant or deal wit the HR issues of the company.i m pursuing my mba and i have no work experience. my main papers were HR and marketing.
Would you pay those rates? If not, how much would you pay for these services? I am looking for honest feedback. I am experienced vocational counselor and am thinking of starting a consulting business. The Department of Labor provides some of these things but not as intensive and a lot you have to do yourself. I am thinking of charging $30 for resume development(hardcopies), $15(on line resume), same price for cover letters, $35/hr. for job development(to generate and provide leads in chosen field) and $35/hr for coaching(for interviews, professional presentation, etc.) Are these rates ok or too low? Would you pay those rates? How much would you pay for these services?
what is a range of salary expectation for a graduate Human resources/ Business consultant? I'm going for a job interview if they ask for salary expectations what is the range that is paid in the industry to entry level/ graduate employees in HR/training and business consulting positions? I was thinking along the lines of 45 to 52 k?
How to prepare for a job interview? I'm going to go for a job interview that is for a business consulting/ training position which relates to HR and also they require some IT background. This is the first interview and if I'm successful there will be another one with the executives of the company. I'm aware of some of the general interview tips such as wearing a suit and eye contact, smiling and sharp presentation but what else can I do? What are some of the impressive answers to questions like :What your supservisor will say about you or where you see yourself in future or what is your weaknes etc... What can I do/say to really impress the interviewer? Should I take some of my writing samples such as business reports and essays I have done? What about the software programs that I have designed in the past? The only problem is that the softwares will be on the CD and I dont think they would want me to show it to them
How would you handle this work situation? I need a 2nd job to "get by." I planned to look for bartending/waitressing jobs this week(totally unrelated to my 1st job at an office), & to leave my 1st job a few hrs early to do this, since the only good time to jobsearch is during the afternoon before the happy hr & night crowds. (My job lets us leave early if we make up the hrs later in the week) I neeeeeed a 2nd job or I will not have enough $ to pay bills. I consulted w/ my coworker that I was leaving early on Tues. Then my coworker had a family emergency that he had to leave early for, so I had to stay(at least 1 of us has to be there). Then we agreed I would go today(Wed) but then he had to leave early to take his kid to the doctor. He's had a lot of family emergencies lately so I know it's not bullshit. So I'm pushing back the jobsearching again. What if this happens tomorrow, should I give in or should I leave early anyway? I don't want to look like a pushover OR a b*tc#. What should I do? There's also the transportation problem. I normally take the bus to work b/c it's cheaper. It literally costs 3X the price to drive than take the bus. But today & yesterday, I drove to work b/c I thought I would be jobsearching & it's quicker to drive to places spread out over 25mi than keep waiting for the bus. It woulda only been worth driving to work if I had the benefit of jobsearching(w/ the hopeful payoff of a 2nd job). If I'd known I wasn't leaving early, I wouldn't have bothered to drive on these days. My coworker offered to reimburse me for gas if I stayed today. Is that reasonable? Should I accept it, or should I say "it's ok" since he's going thru a hard time? What is appropriate to do? I don't want to be a doormat, b/c I've been one in the past. But I also do not want to be a b*tch, b/c my coworker is a decent person & I know he's going thru some stuff right now. By the way, the "family emergency" involves his mother being a missing person. There is high likihood that she has been kidnapped. (not making this up, I swear) To gcason: Trust me if I only had to work 1 job, I would. And I'm a college graduate too. I just can never find a good-paying job, esp since I lack a lot of experience. I am hoping that I can eventually get promoted at my current office job or find another, but I would like to stay at this job for a while to establish work history longevity, since I don't have much useful stuff on my resume from before this job(only retail and b.s. jobs).
Employment background check and arrest record? I just got an conditional offer for a job today if i pass the background check! Do i qualify as a skilled worker for immigrating to CANADA? Hi, iam an Indian National and I've been residing and working as a Marketing Executive for an Audit Firm(Chartered Accountants Firm) in Dubai for the past 3 months. Being a Financial Service Providing firm, other services that follow are Payroll Outsourcing,HR Consulting, Business Formation, Management Consulting etc.My job is to market for the service we offer to prospective clients. Iam aged 26 and prior to this, i was working as the Factory Stores Supervisor with a small scale industry registered Garment Manufacturing outlet. Iam a Bachelor in Commerce Graduate. On the long run, my Manager might ask me to take up the part of recruiting in HR Consulting as well as Marketing probably after 6 months of time. My query is--- do i fall in the category of skilled worker class on either of the cases( Marketing/HR Recruitment) ? If i don't fall in the category, what area of specialization do i require which matches to the nearest possible with regard to my qualification and experience? Iam preparing to join for MBA(HR&MARKETING) very soon, so does that add up my points for IMMIGRATION. Please do help me out with this query as iam keenly interested and ambitious of settling in CANADA. I can make a finalization of when to apply only after i get an expertise on this issue. How and when do you start thinking about leaving your job...? ...when your career "hits the wall?" I am currently a permanent teleworker at my job at a NPO, working from home five days a week. My company provided the equipment, they pay for all the internet service (for now), and I make the most money I ever have since I began working in high school. And that's without having a college degree! Now here's the problem: I've been trying to take a step up, move into a position that offers a higher salary and more responsibility. But I've discovered that all the areas that I can get training in are already covered by co-workers, who might feel threatened if I started asking to work in their particular areas. Since our company encourages training and development, I've even consulted HR specialists at work, who've told me that my abilities exceed my job position, and that there's really nothing available to someone in my position w/o having a degree. So...do I go after a degree, or start shopping around for another job? Would a headhunter help me? Just some extra details to elaborate: I am 46 years-old, and although that I've been told that age should not be a factor in your decision to continue your education, I know that it will still affect my ability to get a job in a market where younger people are preferred, even with a four-year business degree. That seems like a poor excuse for not going for it, but I also have a $14K student loan I'm still trying to repay from a previous stint at a business school, and the average debt these days after earning a four-year degree can run as high as $50K. What I'm looking for here is some reasonable alternatives to accumulating a lot more debt.
HR folks - Questions for you concerning my *ahem* friend and pre-employment background check? OK this may take a bit...After loyally working for the same company as tech support for 10+ years, company laid off dept and he finds self looking for a job, interviews go great, gets plenty of call backs, but no hires. So *ahem* he got to thinking about what they are checking on, and how and when they should be explained. (before, during or after interview or not until they ask) If you could rate his following offenses on a scale from 1-10, 1 meaning no big deal. 10 meaning stay away like he's the plague. 1) minor employment not on resume or app. a) One 3 day stint, Called in to say didn't think it was working out (it wasn't). b) 0ne 2 day stint thru temp agency. (They apparently called called in to say it wasn't working out) c) One 3 hr stint delivering sandwiches, manager never scheduled him again. (Wasn't "peppy" enough) 2) 2yr old gross misdeameanor DWI - has been putting this on App (probation ended recently) 3) 9 yr old misdemeanor assault -not on app (no alcohol this time!) 4) 16 yr old misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor contributing to delinquency - not on app (keg party gone wrong) 5) 20 yr old minor consume alcohol + a few other offenses that he doesn't remember too well anymore - not on app (if you're beginning to sense a pattern here, he's been in AA for some time now) 6) Credit should still be OK, but may be showing signs of crumbling (forced to cash in 401k and now owe many taxes.) 7) 1 yr 6 month gap in work history explained in resume as self employed doing contract and consulting work (found ads on CraigsList asking for in home PC help - but not enough to be able to afford Top Ramen (settled for Bottom Ramen) 8) Jobs older then 10 yrs old, guesstimated dates (Ahh, the fuzzy years of youth) ANY OTHER ADVICE APPRECIATED If any one makes it through all that, you have *AHEM* his eternal gratitude and a big steaming bowl of Bottom Ramen coming to you. (fish head flavor Now With More Powdered Fish Heads!)
Is 11/hr the pay I should expect as a web developer? I am a senior in college, this spring I will have a B.A. in website development. I'm proficient in HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I applied for a couple of jobs and received an offer recently, the pay is 11.00 / hour. Is that what it should be? I have eight years of experience in programming websites and two in a school environment (this is not a school). The other offer was for an IT consulting company/ temp agency. I don't know the pay, but if it's going to be that, then I'll take my chances with the first company. Is 11/hr the pay I should expect as an entry level web developer? I also wanted to add, that even though I'm a web developer I'm testing for the CCNA in December. That adds to my knowledge of LANS and integrating networking technology into websites... I live in Omaha, NE. My grades were/are pretty average.
Resume advice -- should I include two jobs which don't relate to my expertise? My experience looks like this: 2003-2009 finance / credit analysis for a commercial lender 2002-2003 Sales (low level interim position, one company, 14 months) 2001-2002 Interim clerical work (one company, 13 months) 1999-2000 General manager, internet company 1995-1999 Marketing director, international trade consulting The issue is that when the dot com bubble burst, I had some personal (family) issues that forced me to move back to a small town with a limited job market and took two jobs which I did well at, but were off track from my career. Where my resume was business and management prior to 2001, if I use a chronological resume, I look like a guy that has a lack of focus, or an unclear skill set. If I use a functional format, there is a gap in my employment from 2000 to 2003 -- and I don't want an HR person to assume the worst. Any advice? Thanks for your help!

I've been harassed b/c I'm single on jobs. I want to fake a boyfriend so I won't get hit on. Advice please? In my past two jobs, I've had lots of discrimination against me that I am single. My last boss took me into his office and kissed me before I could react. He was married with kids. I filed harassment with the HR dept. and they said that I couldn't prove anything. I am tired of getting asked by co-workers, interns and bosses if I have a boyfriend, how old I am and if I will ever have kids. I feel that I must do something beyond just avoiding their rude questions.Silence often gives people a reason to gossip and think something is wrong with you. I just graduated from grad school and am applying to many consulting firms and agencies where there are naturally a lot of men working there. I do not ever want to go through what I went through before: 1. female co-workers paronizing me because I don't have a boyfriend and they all do; 2.male bosses and co-workers hitting on me even though I dress conservatively and conduct myself professionally. I have no desire to share relationship stories and advice with other female workers. How do I jump into the professional career world and keep my private life private. I cringe when I think that I will have to go through another "get to know the new employee lunch" and have to answer questions like "do you have kids," "are you married or do you have a boyfriend" and "where do your parents live and what do they do." I am getting to the point at which I want to make up a fake boyfriend and just say "yes, I'm in a relationship." I've had men try to destroy my career b/c I wouldn't go out with them. Is saying I have a boyfriend a good strategy? I am looking for a serious answer. Seriously, this is supposed to be the legal section? By the way, Tamsin is not my real name for the person who addressed me by it. A person would have to be a fool to use her real name on this website. ;) For Quizzard: Obviously the words of a someone who has been shot down repeated by the opposite sex and has no idea what it is like to be hit on over and over again in a professional environment. Also, I am not young. I am in my 40's, just look young. Sexual harassment is no small matter and it happens to good looking women everyday. You cannot rely on HR to do anything when they cannot prove anything. The man who harassed me denyed everything and resigned the next day...which tells a lot. Young and older people reveal way too much about themselves at the workplace, and this can lead to gossip and weakening of personal boundaries. The cubicle should not be a place for co-workers to sob about broken relationship and how one stayed out until 4 in the morning drunk. Please keep your unprofessional stories to yourself. I myself like to be a lady and keep the workplace strictly for work related issues and maybe some friendly smalltalk, such as "the weather is nice today" and "nice briefcase." This has nothing to do with thinking I'm special in some way. From experience, I know that co-workers will often try to divulge a person of private information and later use that information to bring him or her down. And by this I mean, try to take their job position, get them in trouble somehow at work, etc. Among women coworkers, unless you are fortunate to have very caring and intelligent coworkers, there is often a lot of criticism. A lot of it has to do with other people's own personal concerns, not really yours. But, nevertheless, backbiting and gossip still exists at the workplace, and it has nothing to do with being or not being any "princess." I dare say, working since I was 15 yr old and taking care of a sick parent, and now being entirely on my own has extracted any of the "princess" in me. But being intelligent, kind and beautiful, though all good attritributes, are not often rewarded in the workplace. Women who aren't pretty and who are in bad relationships, or who are catty will find a way to bring other women down. A word to the wise: be nice but do not divulge too much personal information at the workplace.
need sources to motivate me to work hard? I need to work regularly 85 hr/week currently to meet my financial commitments. Because, I was used to working only 65hrs week till now, I find it hard to do go upto 85hrs/week. Any advice on how to productively work 85hr weeks which a lot of people doing two jobs work or in professions like lawyer, investment banker, dentist, physician, consulting do on a regular basis would be appreciated.
Is the title OWNER on a resume a red flag? I left the corporate world a year and a half ago to start my own consulting firm. Now that I'm ready to re-enter the corporate world, I can't seem to even get an interview. I'm wondering if it's because my resume reads OWNER as my last title. Perhaps HR Managers are reading that as UNEMPLOYED, which is simply not the case. Or maybe they think I'm trying to get business for my consulting firm instead of an actual job. What do you think?
Should I consult the HR over harasser? At my job there is a woman who tends to be very unmitigatedly touchy, I can't stand touchy individuals. Even though it's nothing sexual or very predatorial (it's actually a bit maternal) it's still unwarranted and pretty invasive, I find it wholly uncomfortable and am considering going to HR. She once massaged my shoulders and tried straightening my back because I looked "tense and slouched" and i felt this was way out Of bounds. She's not a bad woman but I'd like her to get the message without me having to be so blatant (I've heard similar complaints). Should I do this? Will they keep it confidential as they claim?
How many interviews for one position is too many? I recently experienced seven rounds with twelve people for a consulting position with a professional services and consulting firm. Interviews with the first 6 people were via the phone. The last six interview were held in a local office over a 4 hour period. I did not get the job but had I passed the seventh round, there would have been an eighth round video conference interview. I met with HR, Technology. Product Development, Consultants, Business Development, Sales, and Executive Management. Seriously, I felt as though I was getting abused.
"Business casual" vs "business professional" attire for a job interview? I have the final on-site interview with a consulting company. The HR email from the previous interview said "business professional attire" and I wore a suit with tie. The HR email for the final on-site interview said "business casual attire". I am thinking about wearing matching dress pants and jacket, a nice shirt without a tie. Do you think the tie is needed? I am worried this might be a test about "following instructions" if I overdress with a tie.
how do I decline a job offer? I'm currently self employed. I just recieved a job offer for a big consulting firm to come in as one of their project managers. They offered 120k/year, benefits, relocation, 20% bonus etc... which is all in all not that bad of an offer for the current market but near the same time another client offered me a 2 year contract at $130/hr (260k/year). How do I decline the first offer while still leaving a good impression and keeping the door open for future work with that company? examples or past stories would also be helpful Thanks!

Since our company encourages training and development, I've even consulted HR specialists at work, who've told me that my abilities exceed my job position, and that there's really nothing available to someone in my position w/o having a degree. So...do I go after a degree, or start shopping around for another job? Would a headhunter help me? Just some extra details to elaborate: I am 46 years-old, and although that I've been told that age should not be a factor in your decision to continue your education, it will still affect my ability to get a job in a market where younger people are preferred, even with a business degree. That seems like a poor excuse for not going for it, but I also have a $14K student loan I'm still trying to repay from a previous stint at a business school, and the average debt these days after earning a four-year degree can run as high as $50K. What I'm looking for here is some reasonable alternatives to accumulating all that debt.
Planned layoffs up FORTY-FIVE percent over December. Does this sound familiar? It should. I told people here that if Obama won that businesses would slash their work forces in preparation for Obama's war on businesses via taxes. Everyone said I didn't know what I was talking about, even though HR consulting and preparing for these layoffs IS MY JOB! http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2009-02-04-planned-layoffs_N.htm?csp=34
Separating Schedule Cs? --My wife has a 40/hr office job, plus does independent consulting out of the house in Education. --I am self-employed, with my own office, plus I work out of the house as a writer. Thanks to great answers on this board, I've about got a handle on how to do my taxes. But wanted to get some verification on my approach, with one follow-up question: Based on the above, we will both file separate Schedule Cs this year (because we have separate business types), with separate deduction lists for travel and business expenses. We both have an office room in our house, with separate desks, and therefore claim dual home offices, which we separate on floor space (it is a 20x20 room, so we will both claim 10x10 for each) plus I claim my regular downtown office for myself. My last question: We both share a car for business. What about when inputing items like auto insurance? Do we put 50% of insurance cost on hers, and 50% on mine? Or do we just put 100% on one or the other? Thanks again! My tax program seems to separate out a portion as business vs. personal, so it just asks me to put in the total insurance amount, repair amount, etc. So when I'm talking about 50/50 separation, I'm just talking about inputing half of insurance under her Sch C and half under mine.
What are some possible reasons that I am not getting any interviews for teaching jobs? Right now I am attempting to be a history teacher. I just completed student teaching. I have pretty much got a solid resume and formula for a cover letter (still tailored to the specific district) after consulting several very knowledgeable people and getting their advice. I received the award for outstanding teacher candidate during my student teaching by a very well regarded education program. I have taught others how to integrate technology effectively into instruction and have done so in my own teaching. The only thing I can think of is my lack of experience with extra curricular activities (definitely willing, but no specific experience in coaching or yearbook or something like that). I feel though, that I am a solid candidate overall. I have even tried sending a cover letter and resume to the principals of specific positions in addition to the HR stuff needed. My master teacher couldn't even get me an interview when he is friends with the principal and his wife works there. I applied at the school I attended as a student (same district where I did my student teaching) and one of the teachers I knew there put in a good word for me. Still no interview. Why might my phone not be ringing? I have not gotten one invite for an interview or anything.
Job or Graduate Training Scheme? I'm due to graduate from Uni in May, but there's nothing I really 'want' to do. I'll take anything that pays the bills. I'm thinking something in an office (consulting, pr, hr). Should I just get a job, or try to go on a paid graduate training scheme? What are some pros and cons of both?
Hello, I could really use some advice on the best way to present my employment gap in the past year? The company I worked for closed down a year ago. I began interviewing & even received several offers but which were not a fit for my life and obligations. A few months in to my search, serious personal family matters arose and I interrupted my job search to focus on getting my family through the crises. Now these situations have been resolved, and I am ready to pursue full time employment. I am a sr. project manager with 22 years of experience, excellent work history, and a solid record of success with great references. Yet I’ve had some people reject me solely because of the gap, and a surprising number of recruiters advised me to lie about this time period and say I was freelance consulting, which I am not willing to do. I would appreciate advice very much. All suggestions are welcome. I would also be curious to hear the opinions of HR professionals and recruiting managers. Thank you in advance.
Child casket briefcase problem at work? This guy at work I share a cubicle with made a comment about my briefcase saying it was too big and it looked like a child's casket. I was totally disgusted by vulgar comment and consulted our HR consultant over the problem but he thought it was funny and it spread it around the office. Now everyone makes fun of me and makes vulgar comments about my briefcase. What should I do? I hate being harassed. Should I just buy a new briefcase? Should I quit my job?
Hi, I have 3 questions specifically. 1) What is the job of a SAP Functional Consultant? 2) What is the job of an SAP Technical Consultant? What i am trying to know is the difference in the work of a Technical and a Functional Consultant. I do have the generic differences but would like to know more about the same. 3) How feasible of how viable would it be for me who is currently working as an HR Recruiter to move onto Functional SAP HR Consulting? Also, how sensible would it be?? Also, which private institutes in Bangalore apart from Siemens could i undergo training with and how relevant would that be? WOUL REALLY BE THANKSFUL IF I COULD GET CLARITY FOR ALL THE 3 QUESTIONS AT THE EARLIEST. PLEASE DO HELP ME OUT. Regard, Sajal Jaiswal
Jobs in South Africa? Preferably Gauteng area? I've been to South Africa recently for a job that went horribly wrong as the guy who hired me AND asked me to fly there on a visit visa chickened out at the last minute when it came to getting the HR to sign my work permit application. However, I haven't been able to give up my dream and desire of working and living there, because despite the overt paranoia and a few quirks - it really is the most gorgeous country I've ever been to. What's more is I have a few friends there and right now at this point in my life, despite having a job and living tax-free in the Middle East - I just can't help but miss the open clean air and the beauty of that country. My question is, is there any service or headhunters or companies that hire foreigners? I'm so sure there are because no matter how tough the government's stance on immigration is, there are plenty of people who have managed to do it, I just wish I knew how! They probably did it through skelm means but even so, it just goes to show that it's perfectly possible. I have consulted an immigration lawyer there (actually a friend has on my behalf) and she reckons that it might be tricky but that there ARE immigration friendly companies out there that do this kind of stuff. So are there? Or is there anyone who specializes in these services? Pls guys, I don't want your opinion just help and advice please, thank you :) If it helps, I'm in the Media/Dotcom field with 3 years (and running) experience. Edit: Hey dWali, thank you so much for your reply. Sorry but headhunting where I come from also means finding a specialized HR consultant who you pay yourself and who finds (or puts your CV in company data banks to be easily retrieved when a position similar to yours opens up), so that's what I meant :) I didn't mean headhunting as in where the company bears the cost for senior positions as I know I would not apply to those, yet. So I was wondering if they did have these similar employee-hunting (for lack of a better word!) services there as well. And yes I daresay am pretty familiar and fond of the Afrikaans vernac as I was romantically involved with someone there for years :) ah well I appreciate the insight though :) thanks

Co-Worker doesn't know what she is doing!!!!!? I just started working for a consulting company about a month ago. Previously I was an HR Admin Asst, now I'm just an Admin Asst. We are working in one of our clients offices, and we have hired a woman from another consulting company to do the HR work here. The problem is, she doesn't have a clue what she is doing! I wish we could just switch jobs, but it obviously isn't that easy. My boss thinks she is doing a great job, but he doesn't really know a whole lot about HR. I WANT HER JOB! She doesn't fill out legal papers correctly (she made about 4 mistakes on my I-9 form), she doesn't use correct language or grammer when she is using e-mail to communicate to our consultants (stating that, " [it's] not a lot of fun to review associates and set goals for next year but it is a necessary part of your role") How can I show my boss that I should have her position and all of things she is messing up without looking mean? Please help, this is driving me crazy and making work horrible. Thanks :)
Why are intelligent, educated persons scary to prospective employers? I have a Master's degree in Education and a Bachelor's degree in Organizational Psychology. I achieved a 3.7 GPA with the Master's and a 3.6 GPA with the Bachelor's. I'm no dummy, in plainer English. All I'm looking for in San Antonio, Texas (where we live) now is part-time work that will pay me $12-$15 an hour...acceptable for my education but not a lot. This will supplement my consulting work. We want to pay off our mortgage, rent out our home and move to Washington state. The Veteran's representative at the worksource office here has suggested that I leave OFF the Master's degree on my resume so the prospective employers won't be SCARED of me. I have gone through this before here in San Antonio, Texas. You apply for work that you are well-qualified for and send a stellar resume...and you NEVER hear from the HR people...I'm talking State of Texas jobs and other "movers and shakers" around here. Do HR Depts. in Seattle, Bremerton and Olympia, Washington do this, too?
how do I survive a performane improvement plan? Your Open QuestionShow me another » How to survive a Performance Improvement plan? I started a new job 5 months ago (after being made redundant, so it wasn't my choice to change jobs) and ended up in the job from HELL. A very busy office, huge high pressured workload, foul tempered, bitter, angry team members, total lack of training, bad tempered boss. I couldn't walk out, I have a family and a mortgage. I have worked very, very hard to get up to speed with a total lack of trainig and support, and have made it, but manager started employee incapabilty procedures when I'd just been in the job a few weeks. We are now at the 2nd formal stage. I make sure I meet all targets (some are ridiculous and it involves bringing a lot of work home) But manger refused to record when I reach targets and makes excuses. The Dept may go out to tender, in which case, half of the team will need to go, and I'll be first as I have only been there a short while. Im looking for another job but how on earth do I survive this? (Ive consulted HR who said file a grievance, which I did, the upshot of that was a discussion with the manager, all to no avail). The anxiety I now feel going into work every day is beyond what I can manage. Any good tips on how to survive? Sometimes the manager is friendly and nice and I think I'm imagining this! She is always very supportive and helpful to two other team members, but used to pick on one relentlessly when I first arrived.
Should I get legal council / file a claim with the EEOC because I was fired from my job? I was fired from my job while in the middle of a human resourses investigation dealing with a harrasment/retailiation claim I made. My boss listed tradies to work the cause of my termination, but never consulted with me in regards to the claim I took up with HR. I think the termination is due to the claim more so than the tardies, but I did have tardies. The VP of Operations (male) did the firing by himself without any one else present in the office and our HR personnel were out of town.He also did not give me an exit interview only 5 min of why they decided to fire me (multiple tardies) and then walked me out of the building. He did not tell me about my insurance, PTO time, or my 401k. It was so quick he didn't even make sure to collect my company credit card or laptop. I don't understand the reasons behind why it had to happen so quickly or why HR was not involved. How should one proceed? Thanks for comments so far. We were recently (aug. 06) aquired by another company who does not have a company wide handbook. They like to handle things as situational issues so there is no broad policy to be followed by all. I have worked in this position for the company almost 3 years and was informed that as long as I worked my 40hrs a week I was fine (of which I normally work 40+). There are many other employed there who are tardy. This can be proven by printing out time card info. I worked in accounts payable / payroll so I had access and saw many others clock in and out times.

where can i find affordable immigration lawyer? (Pls Read Carefully)? I'm a struggling full time student and full time worker in san diego, california. However i received my green card a year ago. Dilemma is my wife is in F1 visa and we cannot afford her $5500 a semester tuition fees in current economy. I was told by my councilor that i can file petition for her, but do i need a lawyer? if yes? where? Churches? will they help finding lawyer? i tried to call 3-4 law firm and they are after me like a hungry tiger after it's prey. 4-5 calls a day. and first they said its free consultation and later when i went to office they gave me a slip of paper where it said, they gonna charge 150/hr for consulting. INSANE!! anyways ...if any of you guys understand my problem and situation i'm going through (min. wage job, school, rent , car payment and my wife's fee) and please some body advice me.. serious advice would be really appreciated. God bless you all!!! what's a legal aid?
SAP HR training run by curry smelling Krish Kuganthasan &dinesh wife malar cheated me? I did my course in Browline consulting Ltd.I paid course fee of £ 950 and they took extra £2500 pounds and promised to get me a job,Everyday I go and study in their instituite and I worked so hard .Now they say I need British Passport for job and they claim there is no respect for HSMP visas. So guys please dont pay him extra and ripped of like me .
I Need to LAND this job, bridal consulting.? This will sound completely crazy. and it is. I live with my boyfriend- we have 3-3 1/2 years to save up money to move currently we are in debt so we are negative $ there are also hardly any jobs so he works for a family member making $25/day when they need him: we cant pay our $500 rent, but now we can eat. We had a car-but it died...so were getting another car with my parents help--1 car. just 1. His plan, since we're far from anything corporate, is to go about and hr away for a job that may pay well working form 8-5 so he'd have to leave around 6-7 depending on traffic. Also I need a job to help save up this money of course, and when we finally move I plan to use the schooling (which im currently doing) to possibly start a event planning Business or work in an already established one-not sure yet. However I need to start getting my feet wet now as i will never learn all that i need, and get the experience i need to do this without getting evolved at the bottom. One other problem: my experience (on a resume) = about 0 . I worked at mcds when i was 14. I did volunteer at a Senior Citizens home (doing everything from serving lunch, crafting with Alzheimer patients, and planning activities with the coordinator) for a year from 9am-9pm, i worked as a waitress for about a month or two. besides those little things I really have nothing on my resume, and since im going to school i have no degrees to fluff it up. So Here is my Crazy Plan:: 1. Where ever my bf lands a job I follow and hit the streets/buses (as he will have that 1 car) looking for nearby wedding planning, bridal shops and the like 2. I go in and talk to a manager for a job, any job coffee getting-trash taker outer, any job and the chance to learn how to be a bridal consultant. So im working as a lackey whileapprenticingg. 3. I find the local parks and eateries so that if i don't start work till 11am i have somewhere to go and something to do from 8-11 since I hitched a ride with my boyfriend. then if im done at 3-4 and hes still working till 5pm i have book stores, possibly malls, and places to go plus the fact that i will probably have to walk to them all hitching buses in between and im sure that will take up some times.. but i figure the pay off is that we have enough money to move in the 3 years, we can get a house and start where we want to be...as we currently live no where near where we'd like to be... SO what im asking is any ideas on how tconvincece the manager of said stores to hire me (when they think im crazy) since i have really no helpfuexperienceses??

John MC Cain filibustered wind energy in 2007, how can he now say he will support it? 2007: McCain Opposed Legislation Extending The Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit; Recent Study Concluded More than 116,000 Jobs Could be Lost If the Tax Credit is Not Extended. John McCain supported the filibuster of the 2007 energy bill that included an extension of the production tax credit to 2011. While McCain missed the vote to on the bill, according to his staff he did, in fact, support the continuing the filibuster, which eventually killed the bill. In its place, Congress passed another version of the legislation that did not include an extension of the tax credit. A 2008 economic study by Navigant Consulting found that "over 116,000 U.S. jobs and nearly $19 billion in U.S. investment could be lost in just one year if renewable energy tax credits are not renewed by Congress… The study concluded that over 76,000 jobs are put at risk in the wind industry, and approximately 40,000 jobs in the solar industry." [HR 6, Vote 425, 12/13/07; Forbes, 12/13/07; U.S. News & World Report, 12/14/07; American Wind Energy Association and the Solar Energy Industries Association press release, 2/4/08] Are any as concerned as I am over this seeming contradiction? Why are you -- Why not?
My permanent residence is in Ohio, but I'm working in CA for 3 months. Should CA tax be taken out? Okay, so my permanent residence is in Ohio, but I'm doing a 3-month internship in CA. I got my first check today and they took out CA tax, but not Ohio. I was sure to put my Ohio address on my W4, but HR changed it (without my knowing I might add) to the address of the apartment they are providing me. In the past I have lived in Ohio and worked in WV. I always paid OH tax not WV. Moreover, I had a job in PA, and paid OH tax, not PA. So, since I am a resident of Ohio, I'm thinking OH taxes need to be taken out, not CA. Also, did HR have a right to change my address without asking me? I signed my name to that form, and they changed what I wrote without consulting me... that doesn't seem legal.
Looking for a creative part-time/weekend job? I have a very good job and make really good money. I'm also going to grad school part time and will soon have a mortgage. I would like to get a part-time job to save up more for school, house payments, emergencies and vacations. Since I won't have class this summer (4-5 months), I am thinking of taking a part-time/weekend job. I'm a civil engineer and I could easily work overtime doing trivial consulting or field work stuff but I want something creative and outside of civil engineering. Something like working in a gym, hospital, translating, wedding planning.... I don't know. It has to be fun but also pay well (ideally not under $18/hr). Any idea where I can find jobs like that? Any implications I should think about? Thanks a bunch! 15-20 hrs nights and weekends. P.S. I speak fluent french if that helps and I was thinking of taking a medical translation course. Good idea? If you have nothing constructive to say then don't reply just for points. It's annoying. How much it pays doesn't really matter. It just has to be different from summing forces in x, y, z direction and other stuff like that.

Yours faithfully, leaving the name blank... does this seem a little weird to anyone else? Ashley, Looks like its defiantly some kind of scam or something. Should I quit my job for a more rewarding, but worse paying one? This summer I returned to my 5th summer internship with a big company. For the past few years, they have paid me $13/hr, and given me important work to do. But last paycheck I found they were only paying me $10/hr. OK, but a 23% pay decrease after 5 years, unannounced and having nothing to do with performance (I asked) was too much. They also have not given me anything useful to do, making me stare at my computer screen for 8 hours, which really makes me depressed, especially since all of my friends are at school and I have nothing to do after work. After consulting my folks, I decided I'd take another job, working as a bus or special ed aide at college. The pay would be less ($9-12.95/hr) and there would be less hours, but I would be able to keep the job through the school year and I would enjoy myself. I also have a disabled sister, so I have years of experience (and fun) taking care of handicapped kids. But today my company said they'd start me at $13/hr again. What should I do

What is SAP HR (human resources)? I've seen some jobs available in SAP HR, particularly payroll consulting, and I'm wondering what it is. I'm currently undertaking a university degree in human resource management- is this sufficient to find employment in SAP HR? How can I gain experience or knowledge in this, do I need additional certification on top of my HR bachelor's degree, is it on-the-job experience, or will elective units in IT and info systems at uni be sufficient? thanks what is SAP software?!
Can I still save my job and reputation? I am having big problems at work. I work in a big corporate company in UK in a team of 10 programmers. I employed here from 5.5 years now. I have very strained relationship with my new boss( 1 year old) now. Reasons: 1. I had time keeping issues last year because of my impending divorce case, bad health. I was on some medication that resulted in hot flashes and sleep deprived nights. So, about 10 times in 8 months I was late for work. 2. But, this year, I was absolutely puctual and just ask for 1 day off in the morning. My boss then complained about my time -keeping. This was first time we spoke. 3. It is now written on my pdr which I was unhappy about because I was un-well last year. 4. Then, I worked with a new senior colleague who bullied me because I am smarter than him. I am working with the company from 5 years and I am very quick with the business processes. He is a very rude person and was really insulting me. We had a big fight in front of the boss, and when I complained about bullying, he put blames on me instead and said that he was angry with me because i have poor performance. My boss seem to take his side because he has 20 years of experience. This resulted in me getting upset with my boss too. I feel so annoyed that he couldn't see my side of things. Now, my boss is making my life difficult. he has consulted HR and his immediate boss and other managers too. He seems to be potraying me as someone who is not disciplined, has performance issues and has bad behaviour. I am so angry and annoyed with this situation. i work so hard, and i am a very capable person. Still, I am being treated like this. Now, my boss asks keeps close eye on me. Shows me eyes if I go for tea break where as other people even take 1 hour off for lunch. I am more and more working flat hours and working on one of the most useful projects. what can I do about this? I think my boss will sack me or create a situation to make me redundant. what do you say?
Need advice on SAP please!!? Hi.. I am an MBA [systems] with nearly 2.5 years exp ((in a non-SAP)) ERP product in the HR module as a software engineer. That was a little technical [owing to my bachelors degree in computers] but involved a lot of analytical skills. Now i am in a diff Co. but I find that this is a dead end job requiring none of the above skills and no scope to learn. I am thinking of taking up a SAP course and go on the functional consulting side. would you suggest that doing a SAP course would benefit me and earn sufficient returns [judging by the cost involved] and if so which module would be the best ? HR or others?.. which would be the best learning center in India and what is the scope for jobs abroad? and also what would be the range of the cost factor associated with it?.. i would greatly appreciate your suggestions.. thanks!
Does money rule or the hard work when it comes to layoffs? This is the question that goes out to all the HR people who believe that they really control the staff quality in a company. In the current economic times so many people have lost their jobs....the people who were hard working as well as ones who took their job for granted. All the major companies go through the annual appraisal for every employee. HR has a good idea who is the weakest link or "I don't care" type personality. But when the time comes for laying people off due to ANY reason, do you think that these things are really considered. I have seen so many people in my company loosing jobs which are not missed because the quality and resource they were, and the lazy asses still maintain their jobs just because they were not in the target salary range for layoffs. If this is not the time then when is the time to implement the HR principals, or are they just for making good looking slide shows? I will give you an example: Say there is a engineering consulting firm struggling in this economy. Does it make sense to lay off a company trained -ready to work independently engineer who is earning lower than an admin assistant who is 25 yrs with company and earning double than engineer?

Filed harassment against boss, but employers think its too much hassle.? I was working for a program and my boss was harassing me so i documented everything and consulted the HR until i couldnt take it anymore and finally brought it to the employer and presented them with my documents and a statement saying that my boss psychologically harassing me and i wanted something done about it. i went on temporary leave so they could sort the situation out. they confronted her about "someone filing a harassment against her" so she quit her job. I came back to work. But when speaking to the employer, they disccouraged me from going ahead and filing and actual harassment against her because it is so much work and since she quit i wont have to work with her. my concern is i worked with the woman for many years and watched her harass people one after another and fire people as she wished and no one stood up to her. She works for a program now where she deals directly with victims in crisis. I think that is stupid because she has created so many victims and now she is an advocate for them??? i only have 90 days to file a case against her and i dont know if i should do it. i am a little afraid to have to deal with these issues agaiin (things have calmed since she left), but i do want her to have to pay for what she has done. some help please.!
Should I take the Job-Heeeelp! Okay here's the deal. The job is located in another state. The salary range was originally between 65-90 k but suddenly the recruiter/manager revealed that HR cut the range to 65-70k. I'm currently unemployed but im starting my own business and finally doing somethings locally that I been trying to do but couldn't becuz i was working and going to grad school. During the interview the manager said that she wanted to hire someone by the 1st week of July so I rushed down there to do my interview but didn't hear a response until the very end of July. When the manager finally got back to me (after a few follow-ups on my end ofcourse) she contacted me by email with a take it or leave it type of tone. She told me that she can call me if so desired. It's funny bc I thought that most offers were formerly given over the phone anyway. I mean it seems asthough she just wanted to communicate via email and keep me in the dark. So i gave her a time to call me and she said she couldn't talk that day or time and said that i can give her another day and time. Please note that I did call her and she didn't get back to me so I gave her a time to call me, which she couldn't do. It seems as though she isn't even willing to initiate the call and expect me to gravel for a job that i wasn't even formerly offered. So my question is should i take it or is her tone an indication of ambiguity and condescending behavior that I can expect to receive once I pack up and move to another state? The pros is- the job offer a important certification in my field, gives me an opportunity to do what i love to do (business consulting), and offer a sense of decision making freedom. The cons- The salary has been cut dramatically. I have a Masters and more than enough experience for the job (even she said so). Im really making progress with my entrepreneurial goals and network and don't know if i want to throw that away right now. The manager's lack of initiation to call and/or offer a formal job offer raises an eyebrow and make me feel like Im not really wanted and purposely being underpaid. I mean salary ranges are atleast a 10k range not a mere 5k (i use to work in HR so Im somewhat familiar with the range of salaries). I don't want to pass up a good opportunity to grow but I don't want to be made a fool out of either and it's too far to go to be mistreated (i just came out of a hellish work environment and not eager to join another one). I hope someone can help me. I still haven't told the manager a new time to call. I'm stalling right now I suppose..
What are employment laws for discrimination on residency status? Legal to deny a job for an H1B visa holder? Hi, I was approached for an interview by the largest consulting company in the US and spoke with their HR recruiter over the phone. The conversation went extremely well and she even set a date for me to interview with the hiring manager in San Francisco. In the end, she asked me if I will require sponsorship from the company and I said that I wont since I am already on an H1B visa with another company and we would just need to transfer it if I get the job.At that point she went quiet for a few seconds and said "shoot, it's company policy to recruit only green card holders" and said that she could not go ahead with the process. She also said that if my residency status changes in the near future, I should get in touch with her. What beats me is that I already have a legal working status in the US for the next 3 years and why would they discriminate based on whether I am a citizen or not? Is it legal for them to do so? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Opinion of women who work for their husbands? I am trying to see the view of women who work for their husbands in society. (Let's ignore the personal aspects - i.e. not wanting to work with your spouse) The reason I ask is that my husband asked me if I would like to work for his company - a solar cell start-up company. He thinks I would be a good person to manage the research projects going on in the company and write/edit research proposals for funding, as well as help manage the finances and HR until his company gets larger. (I also have an advanced degree in a science related field, like him.) I am currently working at a consulting firm, but looking for a new job. I realize the job he wants me to do is far from trivial or menial, but I just felt insulted when he asked me to work for him. So what is your opinion of these kinds of women? Negative? Positive?
How long does it take to get used to a new job? I started a new job at the end of January. I still don't have the swing of things. I used to be an HR Assistant, and now I'm an Administrative Assistant at an IT consulting company. I have no clue what they do, I don't understand any of the lingo, and I'm overall just lost. I'm not used to being someones "assistant" and I don't think I'm any good at it :-( I like the people well enough, but the company is primarily based out of the country, and they bring in most of their employees from overseas. This makes it even harder to learn because of the language barrier, the culture differences, work ethic differences, etc. Ugh, I'm just so lost, I hate coming to work. I quit my last job because it got to be where I hated coming to work. I'm in a downhill spiral and now I don't wanna do anything at all when I'm at work. Plz help, I cant afford to get fired. Thanks for your help! ~*lil mama*~

Hi All: Just got a job, actually a poster from DICE , however I have some recent experience starting a job and didnt get paid after two month and the company itself claiming to be in the business for 16 years and all the office setup was nice ... I worked there for 3 weeks realized something was wrong, finally I think I am lucky enough came out with a pay check after two months, I think the boss did that on purpose this position is suppose to be a outsource consulting position where I got sent to another company to be their IT person for number of months, and upon getting hired I will be traveling to this client's East Coast location, this company I will be working for has no web site, no web present at all actually, but the VP and president told me they are only really doing referrer business not really marketing themselves that way, also the company has outsourced its HR function including payroll thus I will be paid by this company with HR specialty, I mean how do I start checking out this company or what type of question is fair for me to ask now I am even worry about the laptop and blackberry they going to give me , what if there is a "modified device" built-in that I should not be taking onto an airplane ?? what if they will not pay for my trip .... for now I can only trust them until I got a chance to visit their client to see if they are real I am wanting a job but not at the expense putting myself and my family in a bad situation or danger can you provide some comments or suggestions , thanks JBLH
What kind of a job should I look for? Hello, I am a mother of a 2 year old baby and have done BE in computers and was working in a software co as software engineer for 4 years and quit the job when my baby was born. I dont want to go back to sw jobs because I cannot work for full time and sometimes we even have to stay extra. I want to work half a day in a decent job and get a good salary, I dont want to go into teaching proffesion as i am not a good teacher and i dont have lot of patience and i like perfection so i might go too personal to make the child learn and end up getting hatredness from the child. I dont want to work from home and no online work from jobs for me please. I am interested in HR or consulting or any dignified job in a MNC where i go to a office and sit and work for 4 to 5 hours and still get back home and be there for the family and baby. Please suggest whom should I contact in Bangalore for a good and respectable half day career.
What are careers I can have with psychology bachelors? I have a B.S. in Psychology/Pre-Med and some grad school (Doct Program - 2 yrs and almost completed a Masters). I plan on finished grad school at a later date, but I wanted to know what kind of jobs/careers I could have at this time. Btw, I've done things like ABA therapy, worked in HR, and I have a lot of health care experience. I'd like an actual career - something in marketing perhaps, consulting, etc. Any thoughts on these or others? Thanks Thanks for the answers - I would like to complete the Masters, but it isn't feasible for the time being.

Employers' legal obligations to new employees (training, tools and support)? What can you, a new employee in the following case? - you have given up previous job and few feasible options if you return to your country - boss and predecessor verbally say that they had wanted someone else. (boss's boss sent you to work there). - predecessor says boss' boss is her god gather - contrary to original plans by all, predecessor takes away your 2 major tools without advance notice. Predecessor, boss and HR ignore your requests for them to be returned urgently - predecessor and boss refuse to ensure that you have sufficient training time and handover note (handover notes are apparently company policy). HR does not help when you repeatedly ask HR's assistance for you to get handover - Your tool (only to be provided by the company) malfunctions thereby preventing you from progressing quickly enough. (Your only way of keeping up is to carry home work to work overtime secretly to figure things out and get things done) - When something in your charge goes wrong within your 1st 2 weeks on the job (reasons include your lacking training and experience in their special system, not having all the requisite access in the system), your boss restructures the team taking away your assistant and announcing that you are now on her level. When he does this, HR is not advised. (They were surprised when new employee mentions it in passing 2 months afterwards). - Predecessor continues coaching their 'preferred' person / former assistant well into 3 months of your being there. - 2 Persons promised to be there to help you after predecessor's departure to sister company not available. One of which (your former assistant) is physically there but her willingness is dubious. Example, after she says she does not know procedure for a task you have struggled with and lack system access for (and don't even know because of your lacking knowledge) to figure out for 3 months, she suddenly remembers having manuals only when boss needs the information urgently and quickly. Otherwise, you begged other people to do for you and often could not deliver that task on time to which he embarrasses you in meetings by mentioning that he has not yet seen it. Of course, you had been informing him for the 3 months of your challenge with that task. - Employee even had to often use yahoo email address and or former assistant's email to do some things. - Boss tries to blame you again for something else that went wrong but he backs off when you remind him of how these things could have been avoided had it not been for your obstructed attempts. Ex. your foresighted written alarm which was shot down tersely (in writting) followed by his verbal insults and Ex. the fact that the former assistant from whom you were supposed to learn your job wrote a note to everyone questioning a decision you made (without consulting you of a business aspect that was new to you). My adjusting my decision based on her lead turned out to be a bad decision. - Boss verbally expresses surprise that you have not yet "exploded" - When you must be out of the office, boss calls several meetings to review each point of my handover with former assistant saying too that he will be "like her father" and that he wants her to be prepared to do an excellent job. Those are a few of several examples within the same case!

Isn't this Illegal?!? Last week the head of HR of my company noticed I left for 1 hour and came back due to a tip from an agent in my department. Now, I was approved to remain clocked in by my supervisor to leave work for 1 hour on Friday to go to class-which is what I was doing. Come Monday, I asked my supervisor why my hours were short-he noticed I had punched out for my class and asked me about it, I said I did not punch out as he told me not to. So he then proceeded to fix my hours. Well, as he submitted payroll later on, he noticed someone had changed my hours again to where I was punched out for 1 hour- the hour I was gone for class. Later we found out that the head of HR changed my hours and when it was explained to her why I was leaving and that I was approved for this, she apologized, but did not change my hours back, and I lost out on 2 hours that day (because of the break in schedule it took out the hour, and 2 half hour lunches. Not only that, but as a manager at my job I am required to do the closing report which usually takes 15-20 minutes to do. So that day, instead of me punching out at 11:22, I was punched out at 11 by HR as well, so I also lost out on 22 minutes there. Was it legal for the head of HR at my company, according to NYS laws to alter my hours without consulting me or my supervisor first? The thing is, for me to leave for one full hour and remained clocked in for it, I combined my breaks together. The half hour that is deducted normally, and the 2 fifteen minute breaks I am entitled to, which are both paid breaks. I was given permission by my supervisor to combine these breaks together and use it to go to class.
Life advice from Experienced programmers sought? Apologies in advance for being long winded but as background I have a Masters Degree from a leading university (LSE fwiw) and was a national champion athlete during undergrad. My first job was with an investment bank for which I sold $7M in investments only to see the business collapse a year later with 95% in net losses. While was not charged or involved with any malfeasance, as a result I am essentially banned from working in the Investment Industry. In 1998 I founded a "dot-com", raised $2M from friends and family but in hindsight blew this on bottom of the barrel staff whose respect for me is shown by their (accurate) web post about "looting the office" when the industry collapsed. For the past 8 years I have lived hand to mouth allocating whatever money earned from day trading or consulting projects to resurrecting this business. Also I personally went into debt ($150K on credit cards, $100K to a 2nd mortgage, $5K to a friend and $75K to parents) to pay web development companies didn't produce even a demo site but essentially laugh when I threaten to sue them. Most recently I've spent the last year alone in front of a computer learning how to code myself, however, now that I am arguably competent, various motivations requires I find some sort of "job". Nonetheless, sending out my "real resume" has produced zero results in the past three months (50% "over-qualified", 50% "Your entire work history defines the term failure"). So today my mom visited with a help wanted page ripped from her small town newspaper and insisted on helping me dumb down my resume to high school drop-out status in order to apply for $14/hr entry level warehouse and cashier positions she'd circled (if I'm lying, I'm dying). So my question is should I: A.) Keep trying to sponge off of friends and family in hopes of someday finishing this website so that it can (hopefully) be stolen by VC's before it is copied by well funded competitors B.) Iron my best AC/DC T-shirt and work hard at whatever entry level position I can get in hopes of impressing my single mom manager sufficiently that she invites me to bring a six pack (of boxed wine) to her trailer home on the first date I have had in approximately 4 years C.) Start my own company (say domestic house cleaning?) and keep programming on the side, then when that proves disastrous go back to school to train to be oh, maybe a high school teacher? D.) Learn from the fact that I have failed at everything I've touched of late and that my friends (of whom I have none) and family all would have been better off if I had died at birth and say walk into a hospital emergency room to put a bullet through my brains (thereby facilitating the harvesting of my organs for a donor program). I'm looking mostly for just a poll of A,B,C,D answers so please save the moralizing and/or peppy aphorisms, experience has unshakeably taught me both that if a God does exist then he/she hates me and that it is NOT always darkest before the dawn.
